Diocese

When the Republic of Texas was established in 1836, the Church Board of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States saw a duty and opportunity for missionary activity. Two priests were sent to Texas in 1838 (to Houston and Matagorda), and Bishop Leonidas Polk was consecrated Bishop for the Arkansas Territory and the Republic of Texas, in effect the first bishop designated by the Episcopal Church for a foreign field.

Nearly 40 years later, in 1874, the Missionary District of Western Texas was formed from a piece of the Diocese of Texas. The Missionary District became the independent Diocese of West Texas in 1905, consisting of 49 congregations.

Today the Diocese of West Texas is composed of 91 congregations and 28,000 members.

We invite you to worship with us and share our joy. We encourage you to locate the church nearest you from this site or call the Diocesan office at (210 or 888) 824-5387.
