Founded as Missionary Diocese of Western Texas in 1874, originally part of the Diocese of Texas, which was established in 1852. Became the Diocese of West Texas in 1904 as an independent diocese of the Episcopal Church.

Bishop is the Rt. Rev. Gary R. Lillibridge. Bishop Suffragan is the Rt. Rev. David M. Reed.

Headquarters is in San Antonio at the Bishop Jones Center

Member of The Episcopal Church, with 2.2 million members in 7,500 congregations, primarily in the United States. Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church is the Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori. She was elected for a nine-year term in 2006.

Member of the worldwide Anglican Communion of 38 autonomous churches around the world that trace their roots to the Church of England and maintain a “communion” with The Archbishop of Canterbury, currently the Most Rev. Rowan Williams.
