Welcome |
 |
This edition of The Direct Line marks a change in the distribution of this e-newsletter. The Direct Line has been distributed by the diocesan Office of Communications since September 2006 as a monthly, then bi-monthly publication to clergy and lay leadership of the diocese mostly by self- subscription. With this edition, The Direct Line readership will be expanded to include all clergy, church office staff, congregational leadership, and members of diocesan committees, commissions, and departments. In addition, anyone who wishes to receive The Direct Line is welcome to subscribe. If you are receiving this publication and do not wish to, you may unsubscribe by following the directions at the end of the newsletter. To keep our communications current but also to decrease your in-box clutter, we will distribute The Direct Line as needed and in concert with the broader life of the diocese. In the very near future, look for special editions about "Congregations Growing Together," our June 6 leadership event at TMI-the Episcopal School of Texas; and The Episcopal Church General Convention, July 8-13, 2009, in Anaheim, California. All of our editions will keep you up to date about the latest postings on our diocesan website at www.dwtx.org, which we invite you to visit often.

Visit of the Presiding Bishop |
 |
The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Katharine Jefferts Schori, will visit the Diocese of West Texas from April 24-26, 2009. The purpose of her visit is twofold. First, the leadership of the diocese will have the opportunity to meet her and engage her in conversation. Second, it is her desire to learn about West Texas and the ministries that we undertake in Christ's Name. Her visit will be a short one, and the agenda is full during her time with us. Two gatherings will be held to which are invited the clergy, the retired bishops, vestry and bishop's committee members, elected and appointed leadership on the diocesan level, spouses, and other interested congregational leadership. You may attend whichever session is more convenient.
- Friday, April 24: Church of the Good Shepherd (sanctuary), 700 S Upper Broadway St, Corpus Christi 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
- Saturday, April 25: St. Thomas Episcopal Church (sanctuary), 1416 N Loop 1604 E, San Antonio 10:00 am - Noon
Refreshments will be served at both locations. If you are planning to attend, please reply to the appropriate city email indicating attendee names (Corpus Christi: PBVisitCC@dwtx.org, or San Antonio: PBVisitSA@dwtx.org) If you have any questions, please contact Leslie Mixson at 210/888.824.5387 by April 17 so that we might plan accordingly.

Role of the Presiding Bishop |
 |
The Presiding Bishop is the Chief Pastor and Primate of the Episcopal Church. The office evolved originally from a rule of the House of Bishops in 1789 making its presiding officer the senior member in terms of date of consecration. As a result of increased duties, the office was incorporated into the Constitution of the Church in 1901 and styled Presiding Bishop of the Church. In 1919 the office was made elective and invested with executive responsibility for all departments of the church's work. The first election of a Presiding Bishop by General Convention took place in 1925. Since 1943 the Presiding Bishop has been required to resign diocesan jurisdiction upon election. In 1967 the duties of the office were significantly enhanced. As "Chief Pastor," the Presiding Bishop is charged with initiating and developing church policy and strategy, speaking God's Word to the church and the world, and visiting every diocese of the church. The title "Primate" was added in 1982. The Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Washington, D.C., is the official seat of the Presiding Bishop. The office of the Presiding Bishop is located at the Episcopal Church Center in New York City. The present term of office for the Presiding Bishop is nine years. Each presiding bishop is required to visit every diocese in The Episcopal Church at least once during his or her term of office.
