Bishop’s Message
Welcome to la Ventana, the Church News of West Texas. We are pleased to be launching our first edition of this publication. Coinciding with a time in which we commemorate our 150th anniversary, la Ventana was designed to incorporate elements that honor our history and traditions, and also introduce new features as the diocese enters a new era.
The name, la Ventana was chosen for two reasons. First, to celebrate the beautiful Mexican culture we have within our diocese. Secondly, a window is symbolic of the importance of looking both inside and outside the windows in our churches and communities as we spread the love of God and the good news of Jesus Christ within all corners of our diocese and beyond.
Housed in our archives are decades of issues of The Church News, capturing diocesan news all the way back to 1883 (named The Church News around 1901). These issues chronicle our rich history, and the content and formats tell a great deal about not only the diocese but also societal trends. By incorporating The Church News into our magazine name, we aspire to follow tradition, providing news that communicates:
- How God is present and moving throughout our diocese
- How our ministries and churches are changing the world
- How our diocese is “Surprising the World” through a missional spirit and experimentation
- Events, Updates and More
We are blessed to have a diocese that is rich spiritually, culturally, demographically, and geographically. I give thanks for the love and faith that is embodied in our clergy and members, planting seeds and deepening roots that keep our diocese healthy and sound for generations to come.
In Peace,
The Rt. Rev. Dr. David G. Read, D.D.
Bishop of West Texas
