Greetings and God’s Peace to you. Since our last issue of laVentana published in July, there has been much going on in the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. I look back on the past months and year with gratefulness and optimism. The Lord has been at work indeed.
Our July issue was coming off the press as we returned from the 81st Episcopal Church General Convention in Louisville, where our Presiding Bishop Sean T. Rowe was elected. I hope that you were able to watch the Investiture of Bishop Rowe, held on November 2. As excited as we are for Bishop Rowe to step in the position, we are equally thankful for the ministry of Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. The Church and individuals throughout the world have been lifted and inspired by the words and actions of Bishop Curry. He leaves behind a legacy of love, a strong Church, and a commitment to walking in the way of Christ. In addition to the election of Bishop Rowe, much work was accomplished at the convention. I offer my thanks to the West Texas delegation, including clergy and laity, who represented our diocese over the nine days of the convention.
In August, we re-dedicated the newly restored and renovated St. Francis Chapel at Camp Capers. Close to 500 campers, parents, clergy, and parishioners came together, along with Bishop David M. Reed, to celebrate the renovation of this beloved and sacred space.
On October 19, at a Special Council held at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, the Rev. Maria Angela Cortiñas, associate rector at St. David’s in Austin was elected the seventh Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. Rev. Cortinas will transition to the role in January 2025, bringing to the diocese many gifts, talents and a passion and dedication to spreading the love of Jesus far and wide. During the transition period, she will attend diocesan events as she is able. I give thanks to God for his discernment, love, and the blessing of Rev. Cortiñas. I look forward to you meeting her once she steps into her role.
As I write this letter, we just completed our 19th Annual Bishop's Golf Classic which benefits our Diocese of West Texas Camp Scholarship Fund. In 2024, approximately 500 children and families received scholarships to attend camp at Camp Capers, Mustang Island Conference Center and Duncan Park. The tournament was a great success raising $60,000! I extend my heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, golfers, and volunteers for their support.
Finally, as we celebrate Thanksgiving and enter Advent, I ask you to reflect on the wondrous glory of our Savior’s birth. May you be surrounded by the love of Christ and the beauty of holiness.
In Peace,
The Rt. Rev. Dr. David G. Read
Bishop of West Texas
