Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness -Psalm 29.2 God is everywhere – the beauty of his creation and presence can be felt throughout the Diocese of West Texas. From the grounds of the Bishop Jones Center to our Camps and Conferences facilities, to the diverse locations of churches within the diocese, the glory of God’s creation abounds.
Cathedral Park
One of the blessings of our diocese is Cathedral Park, a gift given to the diocese in 1958 by Flora (Flo) Cameron Crichton, stepdaughter of the Rt. Rev. Everett Holland Jones, D.D., Fourth Bishop of West Texas. If not for the persistence of Flo, this land may not exist in its current state. Flo fought to ensure the property was not re-zoned for commercial use and prevailed, offering the diocese a magnificent gift to be used for the highest religious and educational purposes of the Episcopal Church and “That the property be used in a manner that will preserve and enhance its natural beauty and that proper provision be made for the perpetual maintenance of the property.”
Cathedral Park continues to thrive under the care of a dedicated team led by volunteer Paula Butt. The Rt. Rev. Dr. David G. Read, Bishop of West Texas offered gratitude stating, “The diocese gives thanks to Flo for this blessed gift and to Paula whose tireless volunteerism, devotion and love of Cathedral Park keeps it flourishing.” Bishop Read said.

St. Francis Chapel, Camp Capers
Beginning in 1948 when Camp Capers opened, the St. Francis Chapel has been a sacred space to worship – a place where numerous lives have been transformed by the Holy Spirit.
Set against a gorgeous backdrop of the Hill Country, the beautiful, open-air chapel has remained steadfast, nurturing the souls of generations of campers. In recent years, the growth at Camp Capers left St. Francis bursting at the seams, with campers overflowing on all sides.
In 2022, a plan to renovate St. Francis was approved. Care was taken to ensure the architectural plan retained the essence of the chapel, retaining key structures, such as the altar, and ninety percent of the stone and ceiling rafters.
The renovation is nearing completion, and a dedication and celebration is planned for Friday, August 2. Look for more information to come.
