"The Way of Sabbath:" Online Lent Study with the Wisdom Years Ministry

Starting February 23, join the Wisdom Years Ministry for a five-week, online Lenten study of Sabbath, with accompanying study materials to host an in-person or individual study.

The Wisdom Years community is a group of older adults dedicated to spiritual formation in the last third of life. Pulling wisdom from The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel, the group will reconsider sabbath as not just a single day or a set of restrictions, but as having the potential to shape the other six days of the week.

For instance, Heschel says that time with family and friends on the sabbath can remind us to treat all of humanity with dignity. Stopping to appreciate the grandeur of nature on the sabbath might remind us that we are co-creators of a just and compassionate world. When we stop to celebrate sabbath, we can carry that consciousness into the rest of the week.

The Lenten Study will gather weekly on Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m. Central Time, via Zoom, for discussion and small-group conversation. Each week participants will read the book on their own, then gather for conversation in both large and small groups, considering ways to incorporate sabbath into daily, modern life.

The material for this 5-week study (February 23 to March 23) will be posted on the Wisdom Years website and is ideal for individual study or use by small groups. The material will include readings, questions for reflection, and a conversational model. The groups are easily led by lay people and require very little work on the leader’s part. Groups can meet in person or online using Zoom any day or time.
